Around 30 members of the Dead Donkey Club gathered at College Field on Saturday for the club’s much-anticipated annual Croquet and Pétanque Tournament, enjoying an afternoon of friendly competition, excellent food, and glorious summer weather.
The day got off to a fantastic start with a delicious barbecue prepared by Refectory chefs Ash and Mustafa, whose culinary efforts were greatly appreciated by everyone in attendance. Members were also treated to a selection of refreshing drinks, including the ever-popular Pimm’s, expertly served by Carla and Heidi, helping to create a relaxed and sociable atmosphere from the outset.
Once everyone had enjoyed lunch, attention turned to the croquet lawns, where teams competed in a series of spirited yet friendly matches under the watchful eye of the College’s resident croquet expert, Bursar James Couchman. His guidance and good humour added to the occasion as players tested their skills, strategy, and nerve around the course. There was plenty of laughter, encouragement, and the occasional tactical masterstroke as competitors battled for supremacy. After an entertaining afternoon of play, last year’s runners-up, James and Aimie, went one better and were crowned this year’s champions, earning warm applause and well-deserved congratulations from their fellow members.
The beautiful weather provided the perfect backdrop for the event, with many members taking the opportunity to relax and socialise between matches. Adding to the occasion was a College cricket match also taking place on the field, creating a quintessential summer sporting atmosphere across the grounds.
The annual tournament continues to be one of the highlights of the Dead Donkey Club calendar, bringing members together for an enjoyable day of sport, friendship, and community spirit. Thanks go to Sara Wright and everyone who helped organise the event and ensure another successful and memorable gathering.
