As a member of the Emergency Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) deployment team for the aid agency, Humanity & Inclusion (HI), Simon Elmont (7673) recently took part in a field mission to Gaza to primarily assess the conditions on the ground, so as to assess the potential for an operational project being enacted.
Moving around in Gaza is extremely difficult but Simon and his colleague were able to collect data and meet with other aid actors, including the United Nations, to positively recommend that a project be put into place.
Simon is pleased to report this project has now started and HI teams are currently on the ground providing assistance to the people of Palestine and making areas as safe as possible from unexploded ordnance. This work will take many years and Simon expects to travel back to Gaza later in 2024 to provide technical oversight on the project which will hopefully grow as funding become available.
