My name is Nick Mellish, and my father was Capt. Michael Mellish who was ADC to Guernsey's Lt-Governor for many years. Neither of us was at Elizabeth College, but my grandfather was an OE. He was Henry Tupper Mellish (3055), born in Plymouth in 1891, who attended College from 1903-08, and served in France in the Great War from 1914.
I have tried for many years to find out how he died and where he is buried, and discovered that he was gassed at Ypres and hospitalised in Edinburgh in 1917 and died that year at the age of 26. He in fact died of Chicken Pox. This was not uncommon for people who spent a long time in the trenches and who immune systems were very low.
Through a contact in Scotland I discovered that he is buried in Morningside cemetery in Edinburgh, but to my horror due to safety reasons the cross on his grave had been pushed flat. I tried his regimental headquarters to no avail. I then tried the Commonwealth War Graves commission who told me that it was a private grave. The problem was that the Commonwealth War was not formed until 1919. After a long time, my contact in Edinburgh has persuaded the Commonwealth War Graves commission to repair his grave, and I am delighted to share this photo with the OEA.
Best wishes
Nick Mellish
