Exile: The Evacuation of Elizabeth College by Bruce Parker (4747) tells the remarkable story of how Elizabeth College survived five extraordinary years away from Guernsey during the German occupation of the island.
Evacuated to the Peak District of Derbyshire, the College remained determined to preserve its community and traditions despite the challenges and uncertainties of wartime Britain. Drawing on previously unpublished material, Bruce Parker brings to life the experiences of the staff and boys, the personalities who shaped those years, and the remarkable story of a school that managed, against all odds, to remain a single unit.
Featuring more than 100 illustrations, many previously unpublished, "Exile" is a compelling, poignant and often entertaining account of a unique chapter in the history of Elizabeth College and Guernsey.
As Guernsey’s Lt Governor, General Sir Richard Cripwell, writes:
“This is the story of a remarkable chapter in the history of Elizabeth College. I am delighted that the poignant, hilarious and alarming stories of an eclectic cast list of personalities has been captured so well.”
Bruce Parker is an Old Elizabethan, former College master and author of A History of Elizabeth College. "Exile" is an essential addition to the bookshelves of Old Elizabethans, former pupils, Guernsey residents and anyone interested in the island’s wartime history.
