Join us in celebrating Liberation Day

OEs are invited to participate in a Liberation Day project being led and produced by our Elizabeth College Music Department.

To commemorate Guernsey's 75th Liberation Day, our Elizabeth College Music Department are producing a video which OEs are invited to feature in.

Our Director of Music, Elizabeth Willcocks, is hoping to bring Elizabeth College voices together, even though we are apart.

Any OEs interested in taking part are to record themselves (in landscape) singing along to our island's anthem, 'Sarnia Cherie'. Lyrics are enclosed below and accompaniment is provided by OE Francois Cloete (10479) on piano, and can be accessed through our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/HWZgekrmbsQ.

So please don your Guernsey guernsey, wrap a flag around your head, dust off your Union Jack waistcoat and get singing to this.  This really is a case of the more the merrier! The choir will be leading, so although it feels quite soloistic when you're doing it, ultimately your voice will  be one of many in the end.

For sheet music (provided by kind permission of Ray Lowe and is for use for this project only) please follow the below link, then:
https://elizabethcollege.box.com/s/5aoa6xekqgxz44v78vsvkv3seuc1n8i3

  1. Put your headphones in
  2. Set up your phone to film yourself (landscape, not portrait please!)
  3. It is useful (but not essential) if you can clap on the 4th click (start of the 2nd bar of clicks)
  4. Sing along loudly and proudly to your anthem
  5. Send your recording to the box by 4pm Friday 8th May

Upload your video (landscape not portrait) to the Sarnia Cherie box via this link: https://elizabethcollege.app.box.com/upload-widget/view/py3ylg95rlflcbnggsvw5oy7liistun9/112264691817

A la perchoine.

SARNIA CHERIE

Sarnia, dear Homeland, Gem of the sea.
Island of beauty, my heart longs for Thee.
Thy voice calls me ever, in waking, or sleep,
Till my Soul cries with anguish, my eyes ache to weep.

In fancy I see Thee, again as of yore,
Thy verdure clad hills, and Thy way beaten shore.
Thy rock shelterd Bay, Ah; Of all Thou art best,
I’m returning to greet Thee, Dear Island of Rest.

Sarnia Cherie. Gem of the sea.
Home of my childhood, my heart longs for Thee.
Thy voice calls me ever, forget Thee I’ll never
Island of Beauty. Sarnia Cherie.

I left Thee in anger, I knew not Thy worth
Journeyed afar, to the ends of the earth.
Was told of far countries, the Heav’n of the bold,
Where the soil gave up Diamonds, Silver and Gold.

The Sun always shone, and ‘Race’ took no part,
But Thy cry always reached me, its pain wrenched my heart.
So I’m coming Home, Thou, of all art the best.
Returning to greet Thee, Dear Island of Rest.

Sarnia Cherie. Gem of the sea.
Home of my childhood, my heart longs for Thee.
Thy voice calls me ever, forget Thee I’ll never
Island of Beauty. Sarnia Cherie.
