OE Golf Day 2009

For the second year wives and partners were invited to play, and filled two of the fourteen teams, making a playing total of 42. Very respectable indeed but it was interesting to note that, when a late cancellation occurred and hurried phone calls were made, at least another twelve players came to light all of whom said they would have played had they known the event was on. This suggests that a bolder, more golf orientated marketing plan should be used next year.

That aside, it was a good day’s golf favoured with good weather. Five teams played in the morning with the remaining nine after lunch.

The nearest the pin competition in the morning was named “Ho Chi Minh”, with “Groucho” featuring in the afternoon session and both were on the 10th with the green being suitably adorned with appropriate markers presented as the themed characters.

There were also prizes for best team name, which allowed the more lateral thinkers amongst us to give vent to their imaginations, and in many cases controlled the conversation as suggestions became sillier and cruder. Neatest score card was also to be rewarded.

The three major prizes were calculated on best two scores from three using Stableford scoring. There was a maximum handicap of 26 of which several players took advantage. The course was in fine condition and the scores ranged between 40’s and 70’s.

The evening’s fun started well with 44 guests enjoying drinks and chats outside on the decked area by the pool. An excellent dinner followed.

Organiser Roger “ Smiffy” Smith welcomed everyone, thanked the sponsors for their generous donations, namely Nick Brett Property for supplying the balls, which were duly emblazoned with his logo, and to Mike Smith of ‘The Wine Alley’ for donating the wine prizes.

This wine had been relabelled by Smiffy with “Vino Groucho” and “Chat Ho Chi Minh”. Several amusing stories followed this, hilariously recounted by Smiffy and then followed a surprise appearance by Ho Chi Minh to present the morning nearest the pin. This was suitably stupid and resulted in much hilarity. Graham Le Tissier won and was rewarded with a bottle of Ho and a bottle of Groucho, the Ho Chi Minh kabuki mask and of course the coveted nearest the pin marker being original “Smiffy” artwork - very desirable and even collectable!

Andy Fothergill took the afternoon nearest the pin and graciously accepted his wine and the marker.

Ladies from the organiser’s table were asked to judge the Neatest Card competition and this was duly awarded to team Bisson who received “Ho” beaks and balls.

Best team name went to the trio of Roger Norman, Geoff Norman and Geoff Gavey with the ‘INCAPABALLS’ . They received “Groucho” masks, small cigars, and two “Groucho” one liners which they performed admirably, wearing their masks and drawing on their cigars much to the delight of everyone present.

Frivolity over for the time being, for the more serious side of the presentation Keith Bichard was asked if he would oblige and we were delighted to welcome Keith to be with us on the night.

In third place was ‘The Better Halves’ represented by Sue Falla, Karen Fooks and Carolyn Mallett with a very good 76 points. Well done girls.

Yet again, the winning score was 77 achieved by two teams. “Team Bisson”, as consistent as always (having won the competition for the past two years), was tied with “Dai O’ Bollickle and the Dogleggers”, this year.

Team Bisson came a worthy second on count back and graciously received their vouchers.

Lifting the cup for the first time, and highly delighted, were Roger Smith, Nick Brett and John Bihet who vowed to keep it for several years. They also received vouchers.

Keith Bichard said some very nice things about the organiser (who seemed to enjoy himself even more than the rest of us!) and the event generally. Smiffy then threw everyone a bag full of party poppers and whizzy balloons and watched happily as everyone descended into childhood.

A very good time was had by all, and, hopefully, we’ll see you all next year but don’t forget to spread the word to all your golfing pals – it really is a fun day.
