Garland selected for Beijing

August 2008

Guernsey's top athlete and Old Elizabethan Dale Garland was selected for the Great Britain Beijing Olympics Squad.

In what he thought was his last chance for selection, he ran a second slower than he had hoped thanks to the after-effects of a hamstring injury.

Nonetheless, the selctors must have taken into account his recent excellent form, including the European Cup, and named him in the 6 members of the 4 x 400m relay squad.

Being named in the 4x400m relay Garland told BBC Guernsey: "I was gutted, I thought my Olympics chance was over."

Dale has made fairly regular appearances in the relay over the past three or four years. He was back training following a few days rest after Loughborough and has apparently suffered no repercussions from the injury.

POSTSCRIPT

Sadly, Dale did not run in the 4 x 400m relay, but waited on the sidelines as first reserve. We congratulate him on his selection, which reflected his hard work and dedication. Being there must have been a memorable experience, and we hope to see him taking part in the 2012 London Olympics.
