Hockey - OEs v 2nd XI

Wednesday 1 March 2006

With two ex West of England players in the side, in Kees Jager and Steve Ward, and a host of division 1 players the Old Elizabethans looked a strong side on paper. However, it was the College side that started the game in sensational fashion and could have twice taken the lead in the first three minutes with some slick passing.

As the OE’s settled Hodgetts and Ward began to dominate the midfield creating several chances for the forwards. Barrett’s thumping strike gave the OE’s the lead. This was quickly followed by Veillard’s first goal in his unaccustomed role as centre forward. A smart short corner routine straight from Mosgrove Yobbos hockey side’s training manual.

Paul Ridley had already shown his quality in the first half and continued his mazy runs in the second half setting up Cairns for a simple tap in making it 3-0. Veillard quickly added to his first half strike with three more goals in the second half bringing his tally to four on the night.

The OE’s continued to pile on the pressure. A Cairns special pass found Ward on the top of the circle. He turned brilliantly to get away a reverse stick shot, only to be denied by the diving college keeper. With the keeper on the floor Savident flicked the ball into the open goal making it 7-0 to the old boys.
